6,0cm C/98 Marine Landing Cannon
Cartridge Casing
6,0cm cartridge casing for the Krupp C/98 Kaiserliche-Marine (Imperial German Navy) Landing Cannon. To illustrate the size, the casing is photographed with an original Kaiserliche-Marine Mutze from SMS. Mainz.

The SMS Mainz was a Kaiserliche-Marine light cruiser of the Kolberg class. She was launched in 1909 and armed with twelve 10.5 cm guns with a top speed of 27 knots. Within weeks of the outbreak of World War I, she was sunk along with her sistership Köln and the light cruiser Ariadne, in the first Battle of Heligoland Bight on 28 August 1914. 89 of the crew remain on board.

A close-up of the head stamping on the base. Marked: PATRONENFABRIK (cartridge factory) KARLSRUHE manufactured " V 1917" with the standard twin flaming bombs for this manufacturer. Marine cartridge casings used Roman numerals for the month, while the Army used an abbreviation of the month. The "V" in this case stands for May. "143" is the lot number of that batch of cases which were made during 1917. The crowned M is the Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial German Navy) arsenal's acceptance stamp. The "III" indicates reloads. It is very interesting that on such a tiny cartridge casing, it used a full size Marine C/12 primer.

6,0cm C/98 Marine Landing Cannon
A very rare period photograph of a 6,0cm C/98 in action with Kaiserliche-Marine (Imperial German Navy) sailors. In 1898 the Kaiserliche-Marine introduced a small 6,0cm cannon that they used as a landing cannon called the 6,0cm C/98. It used separate ammunition (projectile followed the cartridge casing). You can see the German sailors holding the projectiles but unfortunately no cap tallies are visible.
