1st Division Canadian Engineers
Sapper's Jacket

Canadian Engineers 1st Canadian Division Issue British 5-button pattern jacket of Sapper R.W. Pearson 719183 from Neepawa Manitoba. The jacket has red 1st Canadian Division formation patches on each shoulder and the unique addition by Sapper Pearson of a metal No 1 on each shoulder strap from a German Officer's shoulder board.

Sapper Pearson's jacket and helmet were obtained from the family and were contained in his duffel bag. The duffel bag contained the medic's armband pictured here on the jacket, but I cannot be sure it was his, as the jacket does not have the standard red cross insignia sewn to the upper right sleeve. However, he could have been pressed into service as a medic which is why he had the armband. This is conjecture, naturally, but it makes for a great story!
