Baden Reserve Infantry issued Pickelhaube

Model 1895 Baden Reserve Infantry Mannschaften (Other Ranks) issued Pickelhaube for Badisches Reserve Infanterie-Regt. Nr.111 XIV Armee Korps.

Badisches Reserve Infanterie-Regt. Nr.111 was one of the structured and equipped 113 Reserve Infanterie-Regimenter that were mobilized in Aug 1914.
A view of the issued Baden Reserve Infantry griffon Wappen (front plate) with the distinctive blank Bandeau at the bottom. On a Line-Regt. Wappen the motto "Mitt Gott für Fürst und Vaterland" (With God for Duke and Fatherland) would be on the bottom Bandeau. However, for Baden Reserve (and Landwehr) the motto"Mitt Gott für Fürst und Vaterland" is on the silver Landwehr cross attached to the Griffon's chest and the bottom Bandeau is blank.

The griffon (Latin: gryphus) is a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and an eagle's talons as its front feet. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle was the king of the birds, the griffon was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature.
A side profile showing the low dome-shape of the helmet body, characteristic of a helmet made after 1900. The Baden Kokarde is the standard brass with a red-painted ring.
A rear view showing the sliding vent on the rear spine worn by all foot-troops after 1895.

Note the remarkable condition of this M1895 example.
The helmet liner is the standard Pickelhaube pattern from blackened leather with tongues for a draw string.

The liner remains in very good condition although made from somewhat thin leather, which indicates a helmet made after 1900.
On the rear visor are issue stamps in ink "1.B.R. J.R.111" for issue to 1. Kompagnie Badisches Reserve Infanterie-Regt. Nr.111.
Inside on the top of the shell is a manufacturer's stamp in ink; "Julius Jansen Strassburg" with "1911" for the date it was made.
A very nice matching set of a Baden Reservist's Stein and a Baden Reservist's Pickelhaube, albeit not from the same man. Nevertheless, as close a matching set as a collector could hope for, especially with both items being is such superb condition. To see the Stein click Here.
