Model 1871 Württemberg
Mannschaften (Other Ranks) Pickelhaube

Model 1871 Württemberg Mannschaften (Other Ranks) Pickelhaube. This helmet is a fine example of an Eigentums-helm which is a Pickelhaube that was privately purchased by an individual. An Eigentums-helm could be purchased by any soldier dependant upon the wealth of the individual, but they were usually purchased for wear by Einjährig-Freiwilliger (One year volunteer) and Fähnrich.

This helmet was worn by the following two Regiments in the XIII Armee-Korps:

  • Grenadier Regt. Königin Olga (1.Württembergisches) Nr. 119, (Stuttgart)

  • Grenadier-Regiment König Karl (5. Württembergisches) Nr.123 (Ulm)

A view of the Württemberg private purchase Wappen (helmet plate). Note the voided crowns on the center Wappen as well as the lion, and the voided antlers on the stag. This example is made from German silver.
The rear of this example, which has a typical mounted-troops smooth rear spine without air vent.
The "Extra" pattern of privately purchased liner is identified by having squared off tongues to the liner. The leather is a higher quality and it was felt that this style of liner afforded more comfort. This pattern of liner was also worn by officers until 1880. This pattern is also commonly encountered on Eigentums-helm.
A side view of the helmet showing the Model 1871 screw post retainers for the flat brass chinscales. Note that as this is a pre 1897 helmet, no Reichs-Kokarde is worn. Note the pre-1887 Perlring as worn by all non-officer ranks and the plain rear spine.
