The Jäger zu Pferde
This page lists all the Jäger zu Pferde Regiments of the German empire but for convenience it is broken into two sections; Jäger zu Pferde Regiments 1 to 7, and Jäger zu Pferde Regiments 8 to 13. Originally raised from Meldareiter (mounted dispatch riders) in 1887, the Jäger-zu-Pferde ceased to be used in that function after becoming a regiment in 1901 and were employed as mounted light infantry, similar to Dragoon Regiments. Regiments 1 to 7 wore a Koller with a blued steel helmet with silver fittings and Tombak chinscales except for Jäger zu Pferde Regt Nr. 7 which wore all Tombak fittings. Interestingly, Regiments 5 and 6 wore silver fittings but carried blackened chinscales. Regiments 8 to 13 were not issued the Koller and wore only the M07/10 Feldrock. These last five Regiments are covered below in section 2.

The Koller worn by Regiments 1 to 7 was grey-green with light green collar and cuffs. Shoulder straps for all Regiments were green and piped in the Regimental color. Numbers or cyphers were red. The Koller border (Kollerborte) was green fabric edged in Regimental facing colors, and ran the entire length of the front, collar, and cuffs on the Koller, but only on the collar and cuffs on the M07/10 Feldrock. The chart below lists the Regiment and garrison, Kollerborte color, shoulder strap piping with number or cypher, and details of the helmet. For color plates of shoulder strap cyphers and other details, the links at the top of this page will open these color plates in a new window.

The Jäger zu Pferde Regiments 8 to 13
Regiments 1 to 7 were issued the M07/10 Feldrock (for field use only) with the same color combinations as above so these first 7 Regiments will not be repeated here. Regiments 8 to 13 wore only the M07/10 Feldrock with Dragoner M1895 Pickelhaube with gilt fittings. The M07/10 Feldrock was Feldgrau (field grey) with light green collar and cuffs. Shoulder straps were green and piped in the Regimental color. Numbers or cyphers were red. The Koller border (Kollerborte) worn on the Feldrock around the collar and cuffs was green fabric edged in Regimental facing colors. It appears there was some sporadic issuing of blued steel helmets with gilt fittings to these last Regiments, as the occasional example with gilt fittings marked to JzP Regt. Nr. 8 will surface.
