| In 1887, the threaded post and bolt used to secure the chinscales was changed to a loop and hook system for a leather strap for all foot troops. This system proved to be completely unsatisfactory and in 1891 it was replaced with a new and ingenious system of securing the chinstrap, the Model 1891 post shown here. The chinscale ends were designed to fit onto the corresponding M91 post, keeping them secure but allowing easy removal. Garde foot troops wore flat chinscales for parade purposes. Calvary, train, and field artillery units continued to utilize the convex chincales to fit the M91 mount right up until 1915. |
