Canadian Pattern Soft Cap
Machine Gun Corps

Canadian Pattern Soft Service Cap, Canadian Machine Gun Corps. The cap is made with a soft, heavily padded top and a stiff, cloth covered cardboard visor. It appears that this pattern of cap, started life as a Canadian Pattern Winter Forage Cap manufactured by Anderson Clothiers in Toronto in 1916, but was factory altered to have the ear flaps removed. All examples encountered have been altered in the same fashion. Of interest, the lugs on the reverse of the MG Corps cap badge are diagonal rather than vertical.

On the Canadian pattern soft caps, the complete interior, including the top and the sides are usually tan/grey quilted wool similar to flannel. The interior of this cap, as with all caps of this pattern, displays the unique zigzag stitching pattern on the grey padded interior. There are no grommets on this pattern of cap.
