Pickelhaube Characteristics & Rank Guide

Perlring (Spike Neck Decoration)
Around the neck of the spike was a brass decorative "Perlring", literally, a "ring of pearls". The ball-pattern Perlring was worn on all issued helmets from 1842 until 1887 when it was replaced by a plain raised rim, or "ring pattern". Issued Pickelhauben from cavalry and other units like the Bayern Artillerie also continued to utilize the ball-pattern Perlring until the discontinuation of the Pickelhaube. These helmets are often misidentified as NCO when they are not. Officer helmets utilized a unique pattern of Perlring commonly referred to in English as the "Dart and Egg" pattern. Photographic evidence of Eigentums-helm worn by all ranks, including Privates shows any of the three different patterns, so on Eigentums-helm, the Perlring is not always an indicator of rank.
