Conservatory Cleaning - Page 10
Inactive rust has, by the nature of its action, bonded with the metal and cannot be removed except by grinding which is not an option. Application of a CLP or a good quality gun oil is the least invasive method.

For active rust, the area should be given several generous coats of petroleum distillate cleaner lubricant preservative (CLP) or gun oil. The area should be allowed to soak overnight before attempting to remove it with fine 0000 steel wool. The steel wool should be moved in a light circular motion with the pressure adjusted to the progress. The aim is to apply only enough pressure to attack the rust and not the metal itself. Rust will feel rough in texture as it is worked on, revealing a smoother surface when it is removed. Work on small areas for short periods of time and then wipe the area clean with a soft cloth. Visually inspect the progress and repeat the process as required. For further applications, do not forget to use CLP or gun oil as a lubricant and to watch the area carefully to ensure that no damage is being caused.
Special care must be taken to avoid contact with the silver, brass or painted helmet fittings which could be easily damaged by the steel wool.
