NOTE: Do not excessively polish the fittings, especially the front Wappen (helmet plate). The goal is to clean the fittings using the absolute lowest level of intervention. Aggressive polishing can ruin an otherwise perfectly preserved fitting.
NOTE: This procedure is absolutely not recommended for fittings that are gilded or silver washed, such as those on officer or privately purchased helmets. Using a metal polish will remove the gilding and take it right down to the base metal. It may look "brighter" but the finish will be damaged beyond repair.
For gilded and silver washed fittings, clean the part in warm, soapy water applied gently with a very soft tooth brush, then dry thoroughly with a hair dryer if the part is off the helmet. This will generally remove as much dirt and grime as is possible.
