Years of expanding and contracting can also have severe effects on the shape of the helmet. If a helmet or cloth cap has a "twist" or is similary misshapen, the best option is to support the shape of the skull along the liner as if it was being worn. If headgear is displayed on a head form, then this should not be a concern. If they are displayed on cans etc then a stiff interior support from a relatively neutral material, such a thick, acid free mat board (as used in framing), may be cut into a strip that when joined together, fits firmly inside the helmet. To prevent damage to the interior, this should be wrapped in a neutral, acid free unbleached fabric such as muslin. The helmet will be supported as before, but it will now have additional support to the shape of the shell.
